Coming off a season that almost saw the teams folding, the Minardi F1 team was bought by businessman Paul Stoddard and rebranded the European Minardi after Stoddards F3000 team. Spaniard and rookie Fernando Alonso was brought in the team along with Brazilian Tarso Marques. While Alonso never managed to crack the top 10 throughout the season, his performance in the back of the grid car saw him promoted to a Renault race seat for the next season. Marques fared little better, earning 2 9th place finishes but neither driver managed to score any points and Marques was replaced for the last 3 rounds by Malaysian Alex Yoong. After his move to Renault, Alonso was replaced for the 2002 season by Australian Mark Webber, who managed to earn the first points for Minardi since Spaniard Marc Gene at the 1999 Nürburgring round.
